About OUR
Founder & KUMU HULa

Kumu Hula Leialohaokeanuenue Kaʻula is a cultural and language educator, kumu hula, and community leader grounded in haʻahaʻa, ʻohana, and aloha. Born on Oʻahu into a family of cultural historians and entertainers, she was raised with a deep responsibility to Hawaiian knowledge systems and the belief that ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi is the foundation of a people’s identity.

To honor her tutu’s wish, Leialoha immersed herself in Hawaiian language education at Ke Kula ʻO Nāwahīokalaniʻōpuʻu, graduating in 2001. As a Bank of Hawaiʻi Century Scholar and Princess Pauahi Foundation Scholar, she continued her education in the Pacific Northwest, where she extended her kuleana to uplift Hawaiian culture and Indigenous voices far from Hawaiʻi.

In 2009, she founded Hālau Ka Lei Haliʻa O Ka Lokelani and the ʻO.H.A.N.A. Foundation in Aloha, Oregon, creating pathways for youth through hula, cultural education, and social justice advocacy. In 2019, she became a founding member of Ka ʻAha Lāhui O ʻOlekona Hawaiian Civic Club (KALO), and in 2022 was appointed its first Executive Director, expanding advocacy, policy engagement, and resources for Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities across Oregon and Southwest Washington.

Through her leadership locally and statewide, Kumu Leialoha continues to honor her ancestors by strengthening cultural identity, advancing educational equity, and ensuring future generations remain rooted in ʻike Hawaiʻi, resilience, and aloha.
